I was really hoping that I would get it this time…

Did I do enough?"

This scenario can be applied to many situations, and as a manager and a consultant, I’ve been grappling to come up with decent answers for years.

When putting together the Mind Map to Kanban and the Learning Management Program Courses, I used a book called ‘Competency Based Training Basics’ by William J. Rothwell and James M. Graber, which served as the basis of my thinking while developing these courses.

But what has this got to do with getting a promotion?

Well, my latest response to any ‘getting to the next level’ problem is:

‘What competencies are required at the next level?’

Followed by:

‘Do you have those competencies?’

By thinking like this, you will always have a Personal Development Plan to get to the next level.

Now, I’m about to embark on the latest implementation classes for the Mind Map to Kanban Course. I do this once a quarter and it starts this week.

So, the question I have is:

‘Do you have the competencies you need to manage all the work that comes your way?’

If the answer is yes, then you are probably working productively and effectively - and work is flowing at a pace that you are comfortable with.

But, if this is not the case, then you may want to learn some Lean and Agile Competencies that are designed to work effectively with modern workloads and lifestyles.
